Benchmark
AI-powered competitive intelligence at platform scale
A benchmark on monitoring Chinese competitors in a global capital-equipment sector, for one of Europe's leading manufacturers: the same brief and template, answered by a conventional AI assistant and by the Dcipher platform.
The test
The brief: a quarterly executive report on Chinese competitors entering a mature European equipment market, with fixed tiers, a fixed structure and one quarter's focus.
Our approach
Platform-scale media and patent mining with no fixed company list, so the unknown unknowns surface themselves: a 71-company universe, newly incorporated entrants included.
AI research agents work every known company: filings, events and channel moves, in Western languages and Chinese, with company claims kept labelled.
200,000+ news sources queried per entity across 15 signals on the Dcipher platform; 8,155 articles machine-summarised this cycle, with no language constraint.
EPO data across 12 applicants, company registries in 8 jurisdictions and Official Journal legal texts: the layers press releases can't fake.
Every finding becomes a typed, sourced, confidence-graded edge, and the graph steers the next research round: gap-filling, tripwires and computed deltas.
The client's own template, fully brief-compliant, with every load-bearing claim independently verified, plus radar, census and IP layers no single pass produces.
Breadth
Including the two most structurally significant moves of the quarter and the cohort's only distress case. Dcipher also caught a brand-new entrant: incorporated in 2024, already EU-trademarked, with a more than 90% export share. A fixed list first meets a competitor like this as a lost deal.
The long tail
Fixed lens: "No material new European events."
Radar found: A licensed captive finance company operating since January, electric-line assembly at its European HQ, a CE-certified product range, and 1,000+ company-reported European orders by quarter end.
Fixed lens: "No material new European events."
Radar found: Opened a new regional hub covering four Southern European markets; a new European product line premiered the prior autumn.
Fixed lens: "Maintains European parts/dealer presence."
Radar found: Its German channel has been in insolvency proceedings since 2019, with a fresh insolvency order dated within the quarter. The tier's distress case, invisible without registry checks.
Fixed lens: One entrant named (a sortation player with no forklift line).
Radar found: Eight Chinese automation players mapped and active in Europe, including two with dedicated European operations. This is where the enforceable IP sits.
Depth
One European incumbent has held roughly 5% of a leading Chinese competitor, with a board seat, since 2019, seven years before a second incumbent took its own stake. Both now sit inside the same Chinese competitor's cap table.
Source class: Chinese-language exchange register and incumbent filings
That competitor earns a 40.1% gross margin overseas versus 15.9% at home; a second Chinese OEM shows 30.1% versus 17.8%. Europe is funding the land-grab, and prices can fall a long way before it stops paying.
Source class: FY2025 annual reports (Chinese-language)
One competitor's German network: 66 named contract dealers, published, plus a roughly 250-unit repeat order from a European rental customer that the fixed lens said didn't exist.
Source class: Published dealer census and filings
One competitor recapitalised its Belgian holding company by more than 350x in a single quarter. Another paired its new German HQ opening with an exclusive regional distribution deal, announced the same day.
Source class: Company registries (three EU member states)
Hard sources
66 named contract dealers for one competitor in Germany alone; importers registry-verified in 9 countries; dual-brand dealer houses carrying Western incumbent brands alongside Chinese lines, identified in 5 countries.
EPO data across 12 applicants: all four Chinese truck OEMs hold zero EU-designated autonomy patents, while the automation specialists hold hundreds (one alone holds 157). The automation threat, re-mapped.
JV registrations, capital increases, insolvencies and entity renames: dated corporate facts, not narratives, across eight European company registers.
Duty rates read from the Official Journal itself: a combined 20.6–66.7% on the relevant Chinese equipment class, a separate historical precedent at 70.8%, and the EV price-undertaking template.
Trust
Every load-bearing claim was independently re-researched against primary sources before publication. Applied to the baseline report itself, the same discipline found plain errors in what was shipped to executives:
A 2025 EU trade measure was reported as an anti-dumping duty. It is in fact a countervailing duty, a separate instrument entirely. Rates, dates and company breakdowns now read from the Official Journal text itself.
A large trade-show order figure ran as the report's opening headline. It traces to a single wire release and is absent from the organiser's own show report, and the report's own suggested check can never run, because the unit sits outside its parent group's consolidation.
A named European "OEM/distribution partner" turned out, on registry inspection, to be a meat-products company: a customer, not a channel. Registry checks catch what press reviews repeat.
Three of five "no material events" companies had in fact opened a regulated finance company, launched a new regional hub, or entered insolvency.
Repeatability
An interactive explorer delivered alongside the report, searchable in English and Chinese, with briefs on every node.
Dealer-recruitment pages are hash-monitored, and the first EU-designated autonomy filing by any competitor OEM triggers an alert.
The next edition's "change since last quarter" diffs against this baseline: no re-research, no memory.
Dealer census, verification register and source data delivered as working files, not just prose.
